Whiteout – eine Hommage an „Das Buch der Unruhe“ von Fernando Pessoa (2011)

Inspiriert durch die Lektüre „Das Buch der Unruhe“ des portugiesischen Autors Fernando Pessoa reiste ich im Frühling 2011 nach Lissabon. Pessoa, der Poet, Schriftsteller und Kritiker, dessen umfassendes Vermächtnis im 20. Jahrhundert fundiert ist, wurde 1888 in der Stadt Lisboa (Lissabon) in Portugal geboren, welche er zeitlebens selten verließ, und in der er weitestgehend unbekannt 1935 verstarb.

Beides, die Lektüre des Buches und die darauffolgende Reise nach Lissabon, geschah in einer schwierigen Phasen meines Lebens, einer Zeit persönlicher Verluste und Umbrüche.

Lissabon ist eine Stadt enormer Unterschiede, die mich, kaum angekommen, mit ihrer Architektur neuer, einzigartiger Gebäude und Skulpturen, ihren Silhouetten und Formen, welche sich auffallend von der Patina der Jahrhunderte alten Stadt abheben, anzogen; jener alten Stadt, wie sie Pessoa gesehen und erlebt hat.

Diese neuen Orte fotografierte ich in High-Key um ein Gefühl des „Whiteouts“ zu erreichen. Whiteout ist ein Phänomen, bei dem der oder die Betroffene alle Referenzpunkte verliert – etwas, das ich fühlte und das für mich der Schlüssel zum Buch und der in mir heraufbeschworenen Atmosphäre war.

Die Fotografie, die im Video präsentiert wird, zeigt die Champalimaud Foundation, die 2010 in Lissabon erbaut wurde.

Zurück in Berlin lud ich Freunde und Bekannte ein ihre Lieblingspassagen aus „Das Buch der Unruhe“ in ihrer Muttersprache zu zitieren, um diese aufzuzeichnen.

Die Aufnahmen werden zusammen mit der Fotografie auf zwei Stereoanlagen - im Loop – abgespielt, wobei über eine Anlage ausschließlich Zitate in Pessoas Muttersprache portugiesisch abgespielt werden und über die andere Anlage englische und deutsche Passagen vermischt wiedergegeben werden.

Das Video zeigt die Fotografie und bringt einen Ausschnitt der Tonaufnahmen (aufgeteilt auf den rechten und linken Kanal) zu Gehör.

Whiteout – a homage to „The Book of Disquiet“ by Fernando Pessoa (2011)

In the spring of 2011 I was inspired to travel to Lisbon after having read „The Book of Disquiet“ by the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa. The poet, author, critic whose universal literary legacy within the 20^th C is profound. He was born in the city of Lisboa (Lisbon) Portugal in 1888 and rarely left the city until his death in near obscurity in 1935.

Both the reading of the book and the subsequent travel to Lisbon happened during a difficult time of my life, a time full of personal loss and upheavels.

Lisbon is a city of vast diversities, where, once there, I was attracted to the architecture of the new, unique buildings and sculptures in their silhouettes and forms, standing boldly out from the patina of centuries that form the old city, the city familiar to Pessoa. These places I photographed in High-Key to create a feeling of the so-called whiteout. Whiteout is a phenomona of the loss of all points of reference,something I felt was key to the book and the atmosphere it evoked within me.

The photograph within the video shows the Champalimaud Foundation, which was built in 2010 in Lisbon.

Back in Berlin I asked friends and acquaintances to recite from „The Book of Disquiet“. I invited them to recite passages of their own choice in their native language.

In cooperation with Mica Moca berlin project e.V.

Bankrupt states, extreme weather patterns, nuclear accidents, polar ice melt - everything seems to suggest an imminent crash, and one of our own manufacture. Are we too passive in simply putting together economic and aid packages, or can we overcome the apparently vicious cycle? And can art itself serve to form a new position and even create a new vision? Or is art relegated to the confines of commercial enterprise, to the creation of products by which individuals are exalted for a market-savvy one-upmanship?
The End of the Dream features over 30 internationally renowned artists and three co-curators, invited by curator, Nicole Loeser. From 31/08/2011 to 03/09/2011 their work will be installed in a former safe factory in Wedding. In addition to an exhibition of paintings, videos and installations, the program will include performances, artist talks and lectures.
Realizing the dream of an independent experiment, the goal of the Mica Moca Project-Berlin and now Nicole Loeser is to create a place for utopian dreams and alternate worlds. Wedding is currently in transition; with respect to other parts of Berlin, this ungentrified area with vast offerings of open space is now being bought up and commercialized more and more - plastered figuratively as much as literally. In the end of September the site of this exhibition will also be converted into lofts and offices. Following a sort of rude awakening from the dream of capitalism and the recent months’ market economy, will it be possible for us to dream a new dream?

the metamorphosis of another (lost) restless night (2010)

During winter 2010 I started my project another restless night in my hometown Tuttlingen/South Germany.

I uploaded the pictures on facebook and saved them on my USB-stick aswell.

Back in Berlin I saved the images on my computer but had to recognize that the images shrunk to 0/1/2/3 KB and that the USB-stick was damaged - no copies anywhere.

The only "originals" I had were the images on facebook - but in a very small resolution.

So at one point I decided to photograph them again from the display and so the images changed.

I like the idea of working with unperfection in the perfection of digital images.

Ich entschied mich für 13 Begriffe wie beispielsweise Politik, Gott, Selbstverwirklichung. Jedem dieser Begriffe ist auf subjektiver Ebene ein tendenziöses Potential gemein; er kann sowohl positiv als auch negativ betrachtet und verstanden werden.

Ich lud nach und nach insgesamt 13 Personen aus meinem Freundes– und Bekanntenkreis in mein Studio ein und bat jeden einzelnen blind einen der Begriffe aus einem Beutel zu ziehen.

Direkt nachdem der Begriff gelesen wurde, fotografierte ich den jeweiligen Protagonisten beim Darüber-Nachdenken mit nacktem Oberkörper.

Nach Beendigung der jeweiligen Foto-Session wurde der Begriff in einen Umschlag mit dem Namen des Porträtierten gesteckt.

In einem zweiten Schritt wählte ich jeweils die für mich ausdrucksstärkste Fotografie aus dem 12 Aufnahmen umfassenden Kontaktbogen aus; erst nach der 13. Foto-Session öffnete ich die Umschläge.

Chances / crises existiert sowohl als Reihe handgefertigter Schalenprints als auch als Video.

Für das Video scannte ich die ausgewählten Bilder der Kontaktbögen mitsamt dem dort abgelagerten Staub.

I decided for 13 terms, for example politics, god, self-fulfilment.
Every term can be understood as positive or negative as well.
I photographed 13 persons of my current surrounding with naked shoulders.
For the project each person pulled one of the 13 written terms blindly and I photographed the people while thinking about the term - me without any knowledge of it. After each photosession I saved the protagonists names with the pulled term in envelopes.
When I finished a session I decided for one picture out of the 12 pictures from every contact sheet of every film.
After the 13th photosession I opened the envelopes and knew what each person was thinking about.
I present the work also as handmade photographic prints with the terms beside and as beamerpresenation as well.

I created objects out of ordinary wrapping materials. I photographed them in front of a simulated darkness to give the subjects a three-dimensional impact.
I developed this work in 2009 when I dealed with the two-dimensionality of photographs and the three-dimensionality of objects.

The project "in touch in distance in between" arose in the years 2007/2008. I photographed people of my surrounding without showing faces.

The handmade prints are fixed on the ceiling within threads and thumbnails. Each photographic object has two sides with different motifs. Viewers can walk through the installation. 16 photographic objects, each 14x14cm, are hanging at eye level and turn by the wind.

The installation was conceived for B Wohngalerie in Berlin 2008.

This piece will be send to different places around the world where it turns around itself and around different viewers in different contexts.

Visual Kei

The description Visual Kei is composed of the co-joining of the english word visual and the japanese word kei (which means group, origin, system).
Visual Kei is a Japanese established collective term for visually eye-catching musicians influenced by eclectic styles of music, punk, gothic and metal. Their fans are called Visus (sometimes Visuals) for their building of their bold identities and fashion statements influenced from music clips and manga animations.

I photographed sixteen girls of the Visual Kei scene in and around Berlin in the years 2006/2007. The origin of this movement stems from Japan and reached Europe almost exlusively due to the world wide web.

The fans are dressed like their Japanese rock idols, their manga idols or sometimes like gothic lolitas. The Visus are predominantly female so that I solely photographed girls between fourteen and twenty two years old. This youth movement is not commercial and shocks gladly with very detailed selfmade outfits.
My portraits are an exploration of an individuality found in an urban identity within the multifarious „tribes“ found on the streets of Berlin.
For the particular titles of the portraits I use the nicknames of the Visus, because the protagonists are mostly known under these names.

When I became aware of the German Visual Kei scene around 2005 my interest of Japanese culture increased. The fact that a Japanese movement gained momentum and popularity through the medium of the internet in Europe and that Japan as a country itself, which is so far away from Europe, became so interesting to so many young German people I know – many Germans, seduced by this „virtual culture“ started to study Japanese at universities, study its history and immerse themselves within its unique form of popular culture. A hybrid of East meets West and vice versa.

After the catastrophe in Fukushima this year I am compelled to support the fundraising photography exhibition "For Japan" at Hotshoe Gallery in London at least with three images of my series.

My work „Visual Kei“ was shown as part of product – festival of contemporary art in Varna/Bulgaria in 2007, at We Are All Photographers Now!, New York photo festival in 2009 and at A Spires Embers curated by Museum Man at GogolFest, Mystetskyi Arsenal, Kiev/Ukraine in 2009.
